Main Types of Paediatric Cancer

Paediatric cancer accounts for the second cause of death in children. As a parent, you need to be aware of the symptoms of childhood cancer: although your paediatrician is probably a very good doctor, he/she may have never diagnosed childhood cancer. You need to know to trust your own intuition when you feel that there is really something wrong with your child, even if the doctor initially interprets the symptoms as a common child ailment.

Childhood Cancer

Cancer is a leading cause of death for children and adolescents, particularly in high-income countries. The likelihood of surviving a diagnosis of childhood cancer depends on the country in which the child lives: in high-income countries, more than 80% of children with cancer are cured, but in many LMICs only 15-45% are cured

There is currently no funding for paediatric oncology in Zimbabwe

Kidzcan is the only organization in Zimbabwe dedicated to increasing the survival rate of children with cancer.  There is currently no funding for pediatric oncology and as a result Kidzcan supports the Ministry of Health and Child Care by providing essential and lifesaving services.  Kidzcan’s strategy is to work with clinicians in what is presently the only pediatric oncology ward in the nation – housed at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.
